Mexican-Style Deep-Dish Pizza
The recipe that started it all: biscuits, salsa, cheese, a family-friendly twist—and one very telling grease spot.

The recipes we made. The lives we were living. The people who shared our table. ♥
We’ve all heard of Throwback Thursday. Around here, we’re doing it with a twist—and WAY more food. 😂
I’m starting with the oldest Season’s Best cookbook in my collection—Fall/Winter 1996—and we’re going to work our way through the years, choosing a recipe from each one and finding out: does it STILL deserve a place at the table?
And as luck would have it, our very first recipe would have been one of my husband’s favorites. ❤️
I was a mom to two pretty rambunctious boys, 7 and 10, and I had married the love of my life just 17 days earlier. ❤️
Life was church, work and raising those boys. Whenever we managed a weekend to ourselves, we’d hop on the motorcycle and head for the mountains.
And YES—the outfit in the video is pretty darn close! 😂 My hair was a LOT longer, but give me my husband’s flannel and T-shirt, a pair of jeans or cords, and some flats or boots, and you’ve pretty much found 1996 Lissa.

The original Mexican-Style Deep-Dish Pizza called for biscuits, salsa, cheddar cheese, green pepper, green onions, olives and garlic.
But I live with men. Meat-eating men. 😂
Peppers? Nope. Onions? Not getting a standing ovation. And, as it turns out, the olives aren’t making the return engagement either. HA!
So I changed it. That’s the fun of an old recipe: we can keep the idea, change what no longer works for our people, and make it ours.
And YES, that is a grease spot on the page. Apparently somebody around here liked this recipe well enough 30 years ago too. 😂
Flannel, memories, a thirty-year-old recipe and my 2026 twist. Pull up a chair and cook along with me.

This one surprised me! It was seriously delicious, and if your littles have a fairly open palate, I think this could absolutely be a family winner.
My one change next time? The olives are OUT. 😂 They got nixed pretty quickly at my house.
But that’s kind of the whole point, isn’t it? Thirty years later, the recipe doesn’t have to be exactly the same. The people around our table aren’t the same either.
We take what still works, change what doesn’t, make it ours—and gather around the table again.
And what would you change to make it work for your people?
